Why LPG Makes Sense

The practical case for LPG heating.

If you're rural, off-grid, or sitting on an old oil system, LPG is usually the most sensible modern upgrade — cleaner, more efficient, and better supported than the alternatives.

For properties off the mains gas grid

Large parts of rural Midlothian, East Lothian, West Lothian, and the Pentlands aren't on the mains gas network. LPG is the most practical modern heating fuel for these properties — cleaner than oil, responsive like mains gas, and widely supported by boiler manufacturers.

Modern LPG boilers are efficient

Today's LPG-compatible condensing boilers run at 90%+ efficiency, comparable to the best natural gas units. Compared with an old oil boiler running at 70-75%, the fuel savings can be significant over a year.

Instant hot water, full central heating

A modern LPG combi or system boiler gives you the same hot water responsiveness and central heating performance as a mains gas setup. No waiting on oil orders, no dirty tanks, no fumes.

Local, not specialist and distant

LPG work requires extra qualifications beyond standard Gas Safe — so most local plumbers can't legally touch it, and a lot of rural households end up relying on distant specialists. We live and work here, so we're closer and quicker.

We install, service and repair LPG boilers across Edinburgh, Midlothian, East Lothian and West Lothian, and travel further into central Scotland for full installations. Gas Safe Register records LPG competence separately from natural gas, so not every Gas Safe engineer is qualified to work on it — which is why off-grid households often end up waiting on someone driving in from a long way away. We are LPG certified.

  • Midlothian. Our closest LPG territory — we are based in Danderhall. The rural south of the county is genuinely off-gas: Temple, Carrington, Howgate, Nine Mile Burn and the farmland out toward West Linton and the Moorfoot edges.
  • East Lothian. The agricultural belt around Haddington and East Linton, and the older stock through Gullane and Aberlady, where a lot of properties historically ran on LPG or oil rather than mains gas.
  • West Lothian. The off-gas fringe around Linlithgow — Bridgend, Philpstoun and Kingscavil — plus farm properties and converted steadings across the county.
  • Edinburgh. The city itself is almost entirely on mains gas, so LPG here is mostly the rural fringe and the odd property the network never reached. If you are not sure whether your street is on mains gas, we will confirm it at the survey.

Whole-System Work

LPG central heating, not just the boiler.

A full LPG central heating installation is more than swapping the boiler — the tank, the regulator, the supply pipework, the radiators and the controls all have to be sized and commissioned as one system. Get one part wrong and you feel it as a cold room, a boiler that short-cycles, or a gas bottle that empties faster than it should.

  • Heat loss calculated room by room, so the boiler is sized to the house rather than to whatever was there before
  • Tank siting, regulator, and supply pipework run and pressure-tested to current standards
  • Radiators checked and resized where they are undersized, and the system flushed so old sludge does not go near a new heat exchanger
  • Controls and zoning set up properly, then combustion analysis, warranty registration and a walk-through before we leave

Thinking Of Moving Off Oil?

A lot of rural households are stuck with old oil boilers that are expensive to run, noisy, and getting harder to maintain. Moving to a modern LPG system is usually cheaper on fuel, cleaner in the house, and simpler on annual servicing.

  • Tank positioning, regulator fitting, and pipework run to current standards

A typical oil-to-LPG changeover

  • Day 1 — Prep: Drain the existing oil system, disconnect and remove the old boiler, prepare the new location and flue route.
  • Day 2 — Install: Fit the new LPG boiler, run the supply pipework, fit the regulator, connect to the tank, and pressure-test the system.
  • Commission: Full combustion analysis, system flush, controls setup, warranty registration, and a proper walk-through before we leave.
  • Aftercare: Annual service reminders so the warranty stays valid, and a local engineer on the end of the phone when you need one.

An LPG boiler runs on liquefied petroleum gas stored in a tank on the property, rather than mains natural gas piped in from the street. Functionally they look and work almost identically — same efficiency, same control, same central heating performance — but the fuel, regulator, burner setup, and engineer qualifications are different. LPG work legally requires extra certification on top of standard Gas Safe.
