You will find out at the survey, before any paperwork or commitment — and we will give you a realistic alternative rather than leaving you at a dead end.
Common reasons a property does not qualify:
- The heat pump is a replacement for an existing one rather than a first-time install (the grant excludes replacements, though the loan may still apply)
- The qualifying energy report does not recommend the measure for your home
- The property is not the applicant's primary residence, or the applicant is a tenant rather than the homeowner
- The proposed system would not provide 100% of heating and hot water
What we would suggest instead, depending on why:
- Fabric first. If the property loses heat too quickly for a heat pump to perform, insulation and draught-proofing work is often the better spend, with a heat pump revisited afterwards.
- A new A-rated gas boiler now. For a lot of Edinburgh homes this is simply the more honest call today. It is a much lower upfront cost and an immediate efficiency gain.
- The interest-free loan on its own. Some households who cannot access the grant can still use Home Energy Scotland loan funding — worth checking rather than assuming.
We install both boilers and heat pumps, so we have no commercial reason to steer you toward the one that happens to attract funding. If a heat pump is not right for your property or your circumstances right now, we will say so.
