Yes, hybrid systems exist — but for most Edinburgh and Lothians homes we would steer you away from one, and it is worth explaining why.
A hybrid pairs an air source heat pump with a gas boiler, with controls deciding which runs depending on conditions. On paper it sounds like the best of both. In practice, for a typical domestic property:
- It costs more. You are buying and installing two heat sources instead of one, plus the controls to manage them.
- It adds complexity. Two systems, two sets of servicing, more to go wrong, and more that depends on the controls being set up correctly.
- Grant eligibility is a problem. Home Energy Scotland funding expects the heat pump to provide 100% of heating and hot water. A hybrid usually will not satisfy that, so you lose the grant that made the project affordable.
- The efficiency case is weaker than it looks. A properly sized heat pump in a suitable home does not need a boiler backing it up in a Scottish winter.
When a hybrid is worth a proper look:
a large or hard-to-heat property where full heat pump sizing would be impractical, a home with a genuinely awkward peak heat demand, or a phased upgrade where the fabric work is planned but not done yet.
Our honest position is that in most cases you are better served by either a well-designed standalone heat pump or a well-installed new gas boiler, chosen on the merits of your property. We install both, so we gain nothing from pushing you either way — and if a hybrid genuinely is the right answer for your house, we will say so at the survey.
