A standard gas boiler service in Edinburgh is typically around £90 to £150 including VAT. That's a guide to the market, based on prices published by local heating firms, and what you pay will depend on your boiler and what the engineer includes. Below is where the figures come from and what to ask before you book.

Where the figures come from

We checked the published prices of six Edinburgh heating firms in November 2026. Once VAT is added, a standard gas boiler service ranged from about £90 to £144, with others at about £102 and £126 in between. One of those firms also publishes its own guide, which puts the Edinburgh market at £90 to £150, though it doesn't say whether that includes VAT.

Prices change, and most of those pages don't show a date, so treat these as a guide. Directory listings can show lower "from" prices. For Edinburgh postcodes we saw starting prices of around £75 to £83, but those don't always make clear whether VAT or other costs are included.

Check whether the price includes VAT

This is the easiest way to get caught out when comparing prices. Several firms publish their price before VAT, which adds 20%. An £85 service becomes £102, and a £120 service becomes £144. A higher price that includes VAT can work out cheaper than a lower one that doesn't.

What changes the price

The type of boiler can make a difference, though local firms differ. One price guide puts combi boilers a little below system and conventional boilers, while another says a combi usually costs the same, although system and regular boilers can take a little longer. Older boilers can cost more because they may need extra checks.

The fuel matters too. The Edinburgh firm whose guide gives the £90 to £150 range puts oil at £100 to £140 and LPG at £100 to £160 across Scotland, and says rural areas can cost more because of travel time. Another Edinburgh firm says oil services tend to cost more, at £100 to £180. Neither is clear on VAT. We service LPG boilers too.

If you're a landlord, a gas safety check is a separate job, though many firms will do both on one visit. Landlords in Scotland need that check every year. Published Edinburgh prices for the check vary, so ask for a price for the number of gas appliances in the property.

What the price should cover

A proper service follows the manufacturer's instructions. The engineer should check combustion, the flue, pressure and the safety devices, and clean what needs it. Our boiler servicing page goes through it in more detail.

Parts and repairs are usually extra. A service can show up a worn part, but it doesn't pay for replacing it, so ask how any extra work will be priced before it starts.

What to check before you book

Make sure the engineer is Gas Safe registered and qualified for your type of boiler. You can check on the Gas Safe Register or call it on 0800 408 5500, and the back of the engineer's ID card shows which gas appliances they can work on. Oil boilers are different, as they need an OFTEC registered technician rather than a Gas Safe engineer.

Ask whether the price is the full cost or a "from" price, and whether it includes VAT and parking, which can matter in parts of the city. If your boiler is still under its manufacturer's guarantee, look at the terms too. Worcester Bosch and Vaillant both make an annual service a condition, and Vaillant requires the details to be recorded in the Benchmark logbook.

Book a service, or report a fault

We service boilers across Edinburgh and the Lothians. Call us on 0131 644 0045 for our current price, or send us a service request.

A service is for a boiler that's working. If yours has stopped, or keeps losing pressure, it's a repair rather than a service, so start with our boiler repairs page or our guide to a boiler losing pressure.

Around £90 to £150 including VAT is a fair guide for a standard gas boiler service. Six Edinburgh heating firms we checked in November 2026 published prices between about £90 and £144 once VAT is added. These are market figures rather than a quote, so ask what is included before you book.
