Quick read
F1 on an Ideal boiler means low water pressure, and the boiler won't run until the pressure is back up. It's often one of the easier fault codes to clear, because Ideal's guidance is to check the gauge and top up the system yourself. If it keeps coming back, something is letting the pressure out.
This is Ideal's meaning for F1. Other makes use their own codes, so check your manual if you have a different boiler. Some Ideal models, including the Logic Max Combi and Vogue Max Combi, show a worded fault message instead of a code.
Check the pressure gauge
With the system cold, look at the pressure gauge. Ideal says it should read between 1 and 1.5 bar. If it's lower than that, the system may need topping up. If the pressure dropped suddenly and you can't see a leak, don't refill it. Ideal says the expansion vessel could need investigating, and that refilling without its protection could cause a failure, so call an engineer.
Top up the pressure
Here's a shortened version of Ideal's guidance for its combi boilers. Your manual has the exact method for your model.
- Switch the boiler off and let the system cool.
- Find the filling controls under the boiler. They may be a flexible silver hose or a ridged connection pipe, shaped like a horseshoe. Don't touch any valve you can't identify.
- Open the filling valves slowly and watch the gauge, because the pressure can rise quickly.
- Close the valves fully at around 1 to 1.5 bar. A valve left slightly open can let the pressure keep rising.
- Bleed the radiators, then check the pressure again and top up if needed.
- Switch the boiler back on and check it runs normally. Some models need the restart button pressing after a top-up, so check your manual.
If your filling loop is somewhere else, as it can be on system and heat-only boilers, or you can't find it, ask your installer or an engineer.
If F1 keeps coming back
Ideal says a top-up once or twice a year is generally not a cause for concern. If you need to do it more often, Ideal asks you to contact it. Topping up every month or more could point to a small leak or a faulty pressure relief valve. Our guide to a boiler losing pressure goes through the usual causes, and what you can check yourself for damp or a dripping pipe.
When to call an engineer
If the boiler still won't run after a top-up, Ideal's advice is to contact it if the boiler is still under warranty, or a Gas Safe registered engineer if it isn't. Do the same if you can't get the pressure up or it keeps falling. If water is leaking from a radiator, valve or pipe, call your installer or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Leave the casing on.

Ideal F1 fault questions
What people ask when an Ideal boiler shows F1.
F1 means low water pressure. Ideal says to check that the gauge reads between 1 and 1.5 bar, and to re-pressurise the system if that is the problem. Codes differ between makes, so this applies to Ideal boilers.
